I remember Brett being a surprisingly sweet HPER baller. The dude could catch a hot streak and light things up, which is never a fun thing when you are guarding him. Brett had a smile, laugh, and demeanor that made you know you were welcome and loved. His brother was quoted in the paper as saying "he loved people well because he loved Jesus." That was so true.
He was mature beyond his years, a great credit, I'm sure, to his family. I was never strong enough to do this, but I admired Brett so much for joining a fraternity to take Christ into the Greek system. And what a light he brought. I remember my super-senior year being amazed that Bibe studies were starting in frats, which I never even considered could happen. Brett was such a light, as is evidenced by this huge feat in the faith. Don't sell it short. That is a BIG deal.
Yesterday, my sixth grade class looked together at Brett's picture and the article in the Star. We prayed for him, his family, and his friends. We talked about the reality of heaven, the reality of Chirst rising from the dead, and what happens when we die. Many of my kids were sadly crying at first, but as they saw Brett's smile and realized that was just how he looked when he entered the party being thrown for him in heaven, they turned to tears of joy. Brett is still touching lives, and will continue to. He ran the race. He finished well. He loved God and others until the end. What an inspiration. I hope this can be said of all of us one day. Thank you, Brett.

I remember the first weekend that I met Brett Hershey. My freshman year of college at IU was in 1998. During the two years I was down there before Brett enrolled I probably head his dad, Roger Hershey, speak a half-dozen times at different retreats and conferences. So, when Brett, who was living in Indianapolis at the time, began to look at colleges, IU was one of the schools he visited. I remember being told by the Crusade staff team that he was coming down and that we needed to show him a good time and help him to feel welcome. As though Brett Hershey ever went anywhere he didn’t feel welcome… He stayed with some friends of mine and we included him in our fun for the weekend, took him to Crusade’s weekly meeting, and in general had a great time. I remember praying with some friends after he left that God would bring him to IU because of the impact that he would have there and the ways the Lord would use him.
By the time I left town in 2003, Brett had made exactly the impact, if not more, that we had all known he would. He lit up whatever room he was in, encouraged all those who were around, and yet was never afraid to put you in your place by challenging you to a game of Cornhole (a bean bag toss game).
Brett loved the Lord and it was obvious from the way he lived. He loved the people around him, he loved Liz, and he loved his family. At church this Sunday we sang songs about Christ being risen and read testimony from the Gospel pointing to that truth. After hearing the news of Brett’s passing on Saturday night Easter has never meant so much to me; to know, without a doubt, that we will be with him again, laughing, playing Cornhole, and seeing him smile. That will be a good day.
With Love, Loren Kutsko A friend from IU
